1999: Christina Aguilera
Christina Aguilerais the self-titled debut album of popsinger Christina Aguilera. It was released on August 24, 1999(see 1999 in music) in the U.S., and included Aguilera's breakthrough hit single "Genie in a Bottle", as well as the later singles "What a Girl Wants", "I Turn to You", and "Come on over Baby (All I Want Is You)". It also featured the song she recorded a year earlier for the Mulan soundtrack, "Reflection". Her debut album helped her receive three Grammy nominations, two for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance("Genie in a Bottle") in 2000 which she lost to Sarah McLachlan's "I Will Remember You", and "What a Girl Wants" in 2001 which she lost to Macy Gray's "I Try") and also for Best New Artistin 2000, which she won by beating out the likes of Britney Spears, Macy Gray, Kid Rock, and Susan Tedeschi.
2000: Mi Reflejo
Mi Reflejo is the first Spanish-language album by American pop singer Christina Aguilera, released in 2000. The album includes Spanish versions of five songs from her debut album Christina Aguilera, as well as six new songs. Aguilera was only semi-fluent in Spanish at the time of recording the album. The album hints that the accent that Aguilera uses is Rioplatense[citation needed]. The yei'smo, where both the y and ll sounds are the same, are pronounced as [?] (realized as a "sh" sound in English). Songs from the album earned her two Latin Grammy Award nominations, one for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "Genio Atrapado" in 2000 and she was nominated for Record of the Year for "Pero Me Acuerdo De Ti'" in 2001. The album earned her a Grammy Award nomination for Best Latin Pop Album and a win at the Latin Grammy Awards for Best Female Pop Vocal Album in 2001. Christina became the first American Artist to win a Latin Grammy. The album has gone Gold/3x Platino in the U.S and has sold over 2.1 million copies worldwide.
2000: My Kind of Christmas
My Kind of Christmas is a Christmas album by American pop singer Christina Aguilera, released in 2000.
While 'The Christmas Song' was recorded during her debut album sessions, all of the other songs off of My Kind Of Christmas were recorded while Christina was on tour in mid-late 2000. The album was recorded at the same time as Christina was recording her Spanish language album Mi Reflejo. Both albums were released one month apart, causing many to believe Christina had been overexposed. Nonetheless, the album still sold solidly, going platinum in the US and selling over 3+ million copies worldwide.
Christmas Time was shipped to radio in mid-November 2000 and served as the first (and only) single to be released off the album, despite the song not receiving any video treatment. The lack of promotion for the single caused it to perform mediocrely on the radio. However, years later it is considered to be Christina's classic Christmas carol, similar to that of Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You" (although not nearly as successful).
Many criticized Christina for using too much of her vocal skills on this album and complained that she was oversinging on pretty much every track. Later on in her career, Aguilera would admit that the reason she would oversing on many of her songs was because her record label was forcing her to sing a certain type of music that didn't have the ability to show off her voice, so she would try to oversing to let people know that she could hit certain notes.
2001: Just Be Free
Just Be Free is an unofficial album of American pop singer Christina Aguilera's early demo recordings, which were submitted when she was fourteen and fifteen years old. These tracks were never intended to be released to the public, but were instead used as a tool to enter the music industry.
In 2000, by which time she was a household name, a single emerged into record stores called "Just Be Free", one of the demos Aguilera recorded. When RCA Records discovered the single, they officially advised fans not to purchase it, since it was unauthorized, and had German authorities pull the single off shelves as well. Months later, Warlock Records was set to release Just Be Free, an album which contains the demo tracks. Aguilera filed a breach of contract and unfair-competition suit against Warlock and former producers Michael Brown and Robert Alleca in an effort to block the release, arguing that the album didn't reflect her music direction because of her age when she recorded it, and how they used Aguilera's name, likeness and image without permission to advertise a product. [citation needed]
In the end, the two parties came to a settlement to release the album to the public. She lent out her name, likeness and image for an unspecified amount of damages. Many of the details of the lawsuit remain confidential. When the album was released on August 21, 2001, it had a photograph of Aguilera when she was fifteen years old, and the following statement from her written in its liner notes:
Just Be Free was recorded when I was 14 and 15 years old. At that young age, I made the recordings as a possible stepping stone to a career in music, which is my ultimate passion. They were made just so that I could get my foot in the door of the music business.
I did not intend that the recordings would be widely released, especially after I signed with a major record label. I have not updated or finished the versions recorded in my childhood, and they are being released "as is," although I tried to prevent the release for several years.
The recordings do not in any way reflect my current musical taste and where I am as an artist. The growth and vocal development I experienced as I matured into young adulthood is not reflected in the recordings. The album of new recordings that I intend to release this fall will be the album that truly reflects my artistry, my vision, and my passion. The Just Be Free recordings will hopefully be a footnote in a musical career that I dream will last for many years to come.
2002: Stripped
Stripped is the second English studio album after her self-titled record Christina Aguilera by American pop singer Christina Aguilera, released in 2002. It reached the top five of the album charts in both the United States and United Kingdom and features two UK number-one hits in "Dirrty" and "Beautiful". Although perceived by many to be an album focusing on raunchy themes, it appears to be so only on a superficial level and is thought to have acquired the negative label through the leading single "Dirrty" and its raunchy video (upon closer inspection the song is actually about sexual liberation) as well as Christina's style of dress at the time. Christina supported the album with the Justified and Stripped and Stripped World Tours.
The song, "I'm OK", is a personal account of her emotionally distressing childhood. She speaks about her father and her painful memories from her early life. In this song, Christina can also be heard crying while singing it and she also recorded it while lying on the studio floor. Many other songs on the "Stripped" album speak out to her fans, in particular young girls, to express themselves in whatever way they desire, for example, the track "Soar". This song asks you "Will you love you for you at the end of it all", the "end" being after disguising who your true self is. Other tracks, such as, "Keep on Singing My Song", the last track on the album, on the surface appear to be expressing her own independence, but is also a message to fans that they themselves, if they try hard enough, can achieve whatever they like, as well as remaining independent.
2006: Back to Basics
Back to Basics is the third full-length English studio album from American pop singer-songwriter Christina Aguilera. The album was released on August 15, 2006 in the United States and Canada, on August 9, 2006 in Japan, and on August 12 in Australia. The album was released in Europe on several dates, starting at the 9th of August 2006, and ending on the 22nd of August 2006. It was leaked to the internet two weeks before the actual release date. The album features what Aguilera describes as "a throwback to the 20s, 30s, and 40s-style jazz, blues, and feel-good soul music, but with a modern twist."[3] Her album has been nominated for the Best Pop Vocal Album Grammy Award, and the lead single from the album, "Ain't No Other Man", won Best Female Pop Vocal Performance Grammy Award. The album, thus far, has yielded four commercial singles: "Ain't No Other Man", "Hurt" and "Candyman". The song Slow Down Baby was used as a promotional single to promote the tour in Australia and Oh Mother was released as the albums fourth single in Europe. The album has been both a critical and commercial success, although sales have been less than her previous two efforts.
